Description of Clavamox Tablets
Description
- Canine broad-spectrum antibiotic in oral dosage form: oral tablets.
- Combines broad-spectrum antibiotic activity of amoxicillin with unique β-lactamase inhibiting effect of clavulanic acid, which extends the antibacterial spectrum to β-lactamase-producing and non-β-lactamase-producing organisms.
- Has activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.
Approved Uses
CLAVAMOX® (amoxicillin trihydrate/clavulanate potassium) TABLETS are approved for treatment of the following canine infections:
- Skin and soft-tissue infections such as wounds, abscesses, cellulitis, and superficial/juvenile and deep pyoderma due to susceptible strains of the following organisms: β-lactamase-producing Staphylococcus aureus, non-β-lactamase-producing Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and E. coli.
- Periodontal infections due to susceptible strains of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
Key Features
- Overcomes β-lactamase resistance by irreversibly binding β-lactamase to clavulanic acid component, allowing amoxicillin component to exert antibacterial effect.
- Unique, dual mode of action minimizes resistance to CLAVAMOX despite extensive real-world clinical use.
- Effective for first-time skin infections and persistent pyodermas.
- Effective in treating mixed periodontal infections involving aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
- Wide margin of safety, with no contraindications other than allergic history. (See precautions.)
- Offers duration of therapy of up to 30 days.
